While walking out of the FIT campus at 27th Street and 7th Avenue, I came across quite a scene in front of the Museum at FIT. There were giant three-dimensional letters stacked and piled on top of each other. At first, I didn't know what I was seeing, but I knew I liked what I saw.

There were some students walking around the letters and I asked them what I was looking at. They said that it was an assignment for class to re-create a letter of the alphabet inspired by an an artist. Inspirations ranged from Tiffany and Co. Glass, Jeff Koons, Magritte, and Mondrian. I thought there were some really creative and unexpected pieces, and it was great to see the artwork displayed in such a public and accessible manner—on the street!

Fall is arriving in the city and winter clothes are starting to be worn. Fall and winter are the best times to see really great fashion. The fabrics that are used are ultra-luxurious—wools, cashmere, alpaca, etc. As a knitwear design student, it's the best time of the year to see amazing pieces of knitwear. Yarn gauges run the gamut from layers of fine gauge to ultra-chunky, and people don't seem to mind piling it on because it can get so cold during the day.

It's also the time of year when final projects are being started—not that it hasn't been busy before now! Some of my projects range from creating garments and knit swatches using computerized knitting technology (computer programs like Stoll and Primavision), designing my senior portfolio, and experimenting with the hand-knitting machine to develop knit technique samples. It's a lot of fun, but a lot of work!
