Great minds think alike!  I saw your post today about "Using What You Have" and had to share my challenge that I posted on my blog and at www.junkmarketstyle.com  The gist of it is that I decided to start my new year off with a bang and really challenge myself. The challenge is to see if I can stay out of craft stores for 60 days. I am addicted to craft, thus I spend a lot of time and money in craft stores, much to my husband’s dismay. So, I began looking around my workshop, which my husband affectionately calls “AC Moore”. I have so many supplies and a number of unfinished projects. I decided that in honor of trying to incorporate as much eco-friendly decorating into my design as I can, that I would challenge myself to stay out of the craft store for at least 60 days. You may not think that is a long time, but it is an eternity for me. I challenge myself to use what I have to create for the next 60 days. That means no purchasing of any supplies such as glue, paper, etc. I can only use what I have. I will post some of my finished projects as I go along. I am actually curious to see what I come up with…I think it will be fun! Care to join in the fun? Please join me in staying out of the stores and in your workshop. Post your progress along the way!  Here is my first "No Craft Stores for 60 Days" project.  I supposed to be cleaning my workshop but couldn't resist creating something instead.

Here's how I did it.

Items used: Two of the green Styrofoam Christmas Tree shapes, scraps of wrapping paper, push pins and funky yarn.

How to: Wrap and roll a scrap of wrapping paper around the Styrofoam so it ends up being in a cone shape with a point at the top. Make sure the piece is larger than the Styrofoam. Holding it in place, trace around the bottom Styrofoam circle on the paper (you will cut the access paper off). Cut off the extra paper and set cut to size paper aside for a second. Grab your funky thread. Take one push pin and stick the funky thread at the very tip of the Styrofoam shape. (It is easier to do this now vs. when you put the paper on). Just let the thread hang out. Now take your cut paper and wrap it around the Styrofoam. Funky thread will peak out the top. Use a few colorful push pins to secure paper (see closeup photo). Now, grab the funky thread and wrap it around the papered tree and work your way down to the bottom. Place random pins along the way to hold it in place. Weave it all the way down and secure it along the bottom (see photo).

Voila, instant holiday decor. And...I didn't use any glue! (I am trying to conserve my glue since I can't go buy any for 60 days!) Other options, you could use wallpaper, fabric, etc. instead of wrapping paper. And instead of the funky yarn, you could use something like beaded wire, etc. This was plain ole easy and provided a little down home fun instead of cleaning!

I need a third tree for decorating purposes. I am all about using odd numbers when decorating, but no can do, at least not for the next 60 days! I don't have the right supplies b/c I am out of the Styrofoam trees! Oooh, the temptation begins and it is only day 2 of not being able to go to get supplies!!

All my best and happy crafting! Now its your turn to go create some Down Home DIY! -Marybeth re:Design, LLC www.redesignsource.com
