How to Make Mittens for Lovers
February 5th, 2009 in sewing, patterns & designs, fashion, giftsThis is a project for the incurable romantic! Holding hands in the winter can be made more intimate with a supersized luv mitt! This custom-fit mitten set includes a single mitten for each of you plus a double-cuff mitt so you can hold your honey's hand while you are taking a stroll on a cold wintry day. If you are solo these days, just make two identical mittens for yourself and put the larger one and the love mitt away for the right person to come along.
Supplies
- A firmly felted sweater (toss a 100% wool sweater into the washing machine with HOT water and wash until it shrinks considerably, then machine-dry hot)
- Paper
- Sharpie
- Scissors
- Straight pins
- Sewing machine
- Thread to match sweater
A bright red, firmly felted sweater will make a very cozy and romantic set of mitts.
Step by Step
If you don't have your sweetie's hand available, use an existing pair of gloves as a template.
Place your hand on paper and trace around, leaving a 1/2-inch ease on all sides. Do the same for your squeeze. Cut out both templates.
The love mitt should be sized to accommodate the larger hand.
Tape together two sheets of paper. Position the hand templates in a hand-holding position on the paper to get an estimation of the size your mitt needs to be, and mark the top edge and each cuff position on the paper.
For a smooth and even edge, draw around a dinner plate.
Begin at the top by tracing a curve, then draw one side of the mitt. Fold the paper in half and trace the outline, ensuring that you will have a uniform design.
Cut out the paper templates.
Depending on the size of your sweater, you may have to do some creative positioning of the templates to make sure you have enough material. I just had enough wiggle room! Pin down the templates, and cut out the fabric with a 1/4-inch seam allowance.
Extend the "cuff" area to suit your length requirements.
Position the templates to maximize the sleeve material.
Pin the cut-out material right sides together.
Pin the template to one layer of the material at a time when cutting out your pieces.
Sew together with a 1/4-inch seam allowance. Remember to backstitch at the cuff edge as there will be quite a bit of strain here as you put on and take off the mittens. Turn right side out. Use a chopstick or the eraser edge of a pencil to poke out the thumb completely.
Pin together rights sides together before sewing.
Wear your new mitts with your special someone to stay close and warm!
The little appliquéd heart says it all!
After you make this project, show off your work to other members!
