When my friend Judith turned 50, I wasn't sure what to get her. I ended up buying her a blank journal with an orange fabric cover. The night before her big party, we got together with just a few friends. I saved my present for the next day, but another friend gave her the most darling pair of handmade slippers- with a gigantic poppy on each one. They were red and black. She seemed delighted by them. I was reminded of a wonderful poppy button I had, and suddenly, I knew I needed to make a journal cover with that poppy button to go with her new slippers. I made this journal cover the next day, before the big event.
