Ruffles Abound Dress
September 17th, 2009 in sewing, fashion, galleryThis dress was inspired by the dress I saw in the Anteprima ad in the Ala Moana Magazine from when I was in Hawaii. I have no idea who designed this dress, but Anteprima sells shiny bags made out of wire.
This dress is made from a polyester knit. I had tons of it so I wanted to go crazy with the side ruffles. I draped this dress on my own body, as my dress form was unavailable. As with almost all of my dresses, no sewing machine touched this dress, I stitched the dress entirely by hand with mostly backstitches because it's flexible and stretchy along with the fabric. I cut the ruffles by cutting out a large circle and then cutting out a smaller circle in the middle and attaching the smaller circle to the side to form the side ruffles. Also hidden in the ruffles are side pockets. I left the ruffle edges raw as finishing them would ruin the drape and flow, and this was made with a tightly woven kniw, which would hardly unravel.
I only know what this inspiration dress looked like from the side, so I mostly used my imagination.
This makes such a fun dancing dress, too bad I can't post a video of me twirling in this thing.
