"DETAILS, DETAILS, DETAILS" Heirloom Women's blouse
September 21st, 2009 in sewing, embroidery, gallery
The first thing I do when I pick up any copy of THREADS magazine, is turn it over. Whether featuring a complete garment, or honing in on a specific detail, there is always something to inspire my creativity. The back of the April/May 2002 edition, featuring four chemisette's dating from around 1830 to 1860, especially feed into my love of antique garments and whitework embroidery.
I decided to make a blouse using one of these "dickies" as my blueprint. I found an antique embroidery pattern, and using computer software, digitized it for my embroidery machine, and stitched it down the front placket with cotton embroidery thread, hiding my buttons underneath. I added long sleeves, with released tucks at the wrist, and stitched the same embroidery on the cuff.
I believe it is the details that make one garment stand out from the others. A little time, and some basic "heirloom" techniques create a a contemporary garment with a vintage flair. Perfect for the workplace, or an evening out.
