Fortuny inspired jacket
September 23rd, 2009 in sewing, fashion, restyle, embroidery, galleryThe inspiration for my jacket was a Fortuny jacket in blue embossed velvet that sold for $12,000! Fortuny was know for his fabulous fabrics during the 1920's and 30's.
Using the picture as my guide, I drafted my pattern and made my jacket adding the peplum for additional length - BUT - as I am into "Reincarnations" I made my jacket from a thrift store drape! The peplum on the jacket is actually the lower hem of the drape. The silk velvet trim around the peplum is a side seam cut from another thrift store find - a Laura Ashley dress in brown and burnt orange silk velvet. The jacket is slightly gathered and eased in the back to fit the drape hem without having to cut it. The tassel ties are from a thrift store belt and the gold findings at the top of the tassels are two vintage buttons. I hand embroidered the lazy daisy stitches free form in all autumn shades.
As the jacket is unlined, I covered the seams with a pale grey wide lace hem binding that matches the fabric background and I added a small padded collar in the brown silk velvet for added interest in the back.
