Picnic Tote
July 30th, 2008 in sewing, restyle, galleryI made this tote out of plastic shopping bags. I found out from a tutorial online that you can iron them and create a sort of fabric. It took around 20-30 bags cut, folded and ironed to create this bag. I then used some scrap fabric from another craft to make the applique and the strap. And I had the D-rings lying around, so I actually didn't spend anything on this craft. Ironing the plastic bags makes them take on a kind of ripply texture which is really cool, plus they are totally wipeable which makes them great for a picnic bag. Spills won't be a problem at all. It has a pocket inside for plates and another for silverware. It has straps with velcro to hold cups and a drink bottle upright so they don't spill. And it can hold quite a lot of food! The small amount of polka dot fabric and the zigzag stitch are just enough to spice up the white plastic to make an eye-catching design.
I'd like to enter this in the Eco-chic category. I think it is a winner because it is such a great use of plastic bags (which usually just accumulate in your cabinet until you throw them away). It is totally inexpensive, and it is my own simple, modern, funky design. Plus my granny would love the polka dot fabric!
